Today, avocados are one of the most globally‑consumed and explosively popular fruits at market. But even when avocados were more commonly associated with Latin American culture, and grown primarily in the highlands of Mexico and Guatemala, Subsole was in the avocado business in a meaningful way.
Subsole was quick to recognize the potential of high‑quality Chilean avocados for contra‑seasonal export. As an early‑adopter of avocados in the 1990’s, the company has spent decades fine‑tuning its orchard management and post‑harvest handling expertise.
Thanks to this early work, today Subsole has a substantial and mature avocado program, currently focused on the production and export of Hass and GEM® avocado varieties to international destinations.
In Chile, avocado crops range from the IV to the VI Region, with the largest surface (60%) concentrated in the V Region. Chilean yield areas are differentiated by their advantageous year‑round heat accumulation, which importantly results in early yields from July until February. Avocados trees that grow in more mountainous areas tend to be earlier‑harvest than those located closer to the coast.
Avocados trees require frost‑free zones and warm temperatures during the flowering and fruit development to achieve good yields and stable production over time.
Subsole’s primary avocado export markets are primarily the EU and the U.K., followed by Latin America, and especially Argentina.
The domestic Chilean market is also very important and a region where Subsole has become a leader using cutting‑edge, ripening‑selection technology tailored for ready‑to‑eat avocados, a true innovation for the Chilean market.
