Cherries require a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and rainy winters. Cherries also require low temperatures to preserve their dormant period and protect buds throughout the winter. With the help of innovations in agronomic technologies, the productive cherry regions in Chile are expanding, ranging from the IV to the XI Regions.
Subsole’s cherries are primarily harvested in Chile’s Central area, particularly the Metropolitan, VI and VII Regions, and each is harvested at the optimal point for its variety. They are then processed using techniques that allow them to reach their destinations at peak quality.
Today, Subsole is actively seeking new cherry growers and production land, that will yield cherries of the high quality the company’s discerning customers demand. To that end, Subsole has invested in new, state-of-the-art, cherry-packing and cold storage capabilities at their Olivar Plant.
Subsole began its cherry program in 2007, with confidence in the quality of Chilean cherries and the potential for those cherries in global markets.
Subsole cherries are exported mainly to Asia where they are highly desired in Asia for their excellent quality, flavor and timely arrival – just before Chinese New Year. North America and Europe are also markets where interest in cherries has grown.
Early-harvest cherries typically go by air, with the bulk of Subsole’s fruit exports being sent by sea. Container shipping of cherries is now possible thanks to new technologies, which include controlled-atmosphere bags, allowing for optimal freshness despite extended transit times.
